1) Intro:
I bought a prepay E169 GSM/3G usb stick from Sunrise CH.
It is mainly for the Xandros based Eeepc.
I tried to use as it is. No avail.
Hopefully, I have installed EeepcLinuxos Beta 3 version on a 2G sd.
The E169 was recognised right away. I was able to make a Gsm connection and surf on the web.
My Google friend is there to help me to sort out the problem encountered by Xandros.
2) My Xandros E169 etup:
Thanks to the helpful links an their authors:
a)http://bennywong74.blogspot.com/2008/06/huawei-e169-usb-modem-on-asus-eeepc.html
b) http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/ c) http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=254
and more ...
For my own sake, I have compiled the usb_modeswitch (0.94). needed software:
- build-essential (apt-get install),
- usb_modeswitch source (b) ,
- libusb-dev (apt-get install),
- libusb, usbutils (apt-get install),
In the decompressed usb_modeswitch diretory, I just use the compile command:
gcc -l usb -o usb_modeswitch usb_modeswitch.c
Put the executable usb_modeswitch into /usr/local/bin.
Plug in the E169, and see:
/home/user/My Documents/usb_modeswitch-0.9.4> lsusb

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 12d1:1001 --- My comment: E169
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Execute the commands:
sudo ./usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1001 -d 1
sudo ./usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1001 -H 1
nb: Some msgs in the forii suggested to use vendor:product with 0x prefix. It doesn't work for me.
I suggest to use the lsusb command and use the values as shown.
3) Testing the connection:
As my Xandros Eeepc is french localysed, I will try to spell label in English.
- On Internet Easymenu, choose network, click on Create;
- Choose GSM/3G Utms, Click Next;
- Should show:
huawei-E169 /dev/ttyUSB0 If empty, then E169 was not detected. hummm ...
Click Next;
- Enter the PIN number, click Next;
- Empty screen ? Then click on Search; Wait ...
The available service providers should how up; if I am in a right location.
Choose one provider. Mine was checked as TDC vodphone. Click next.
- Here, I was able to change my provider (Sunrise UTMS);
The parameters were set automatically, eg, APN, username: guest, password: guest, *99# stuff ...
Check to start automatically and terminate.
- A message will tell me that I am connected ;
- Check with firefox. Voila. Now, I have to call Sunrise for the prepay matter, as I don't know yet,
what I should do next.
My first connection in UTMS. Nice.
4) Conclusion:
With Eeepclinuxos 3beta, I tried successfully to link with gprs.swisscom.com, guest, guest.
So the E169 works well with gprs an utms.
Thanks to the web. One is not alone to tinker almost blindly, days and nights.
Exponential learning curve. The heck plus ultra ! HPU ?
Arrrgh, I am still alive ...
